There couldn't have been a better time for the New Jersey Devils (1-4-1) to have a five-day break.

The Devils capped off a miserable week with a 4-1 loss against the Boston Bruins in Newark, their second loss in as many days.

The lone New Jersey win came earlier in the week in Buffalo, in a game dominated by both goalies, that was eventually ended in overtime when Ilya Kovalchuk netted his first goal of the season to give New Jersey the 1-0 win.

The Devils opened the season games on back-to-back nights, losing at the Prudentail Center to the Stars 4-3 in overtime, then getting crushed by the Washington Capitals 7-2 in Washington last Saturday night.

The Devils also lost their only day game of the year so far, also a home game against divisonal foe, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Last season, New Jersey ousted the Penguins in all six regular season games.

So far there aren't too many bright spots, but it appears that at least Kovalchuk is staying-up-to-date with his near point-per-game quota. He has two goals and three assists so far, totaling five points through the first six games.

Long-time Devil Patrik Elias has four points through the first week with one goal and three assists. Jason Arnott has two goals, while Zach Parise and Travis Zajac each have a goal of their own.

The down-side to these players numbers so far are there plus/minus. Of the aforementioned players, only Parise and Zajac have plus/minus' that aren't negative--an alaraming statistic through just a week.

In net, Martin Broduer has been shaky as well, allowing a total of 18 goals in all six starts. For you math majors out there, that's a 3.18 GAA.

In the upcoming week, the Devils will travel to Montreal to take on the Brian Gionta-lead Candiens (3-1-1) and return home for two weekend games at The Rock to host the Sabres(1-4-1) and the Rangers(1-1-1)

It is still early, and there are a lot of games left to play in New Jersey, but it is fair to say Devils fans are on their toes. New Jersey will travel out west in the coming weeks and a turnaround is going to be expected for Jersey's Team.
